A real town by the sea
Zakynthos Town stretches along the east coast around its harbour. It was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1953, keeping the arcaded streets and squares of its Venetian past. Solomos Square opens onto the sea, the church of Agios Dionysios, the island's patron saint, stands at the southern end of the waterfront, and above the town the hill of Bochali leads up to the old Venetian castle.
Ferries leave from the port for Kyllini on the mainland. The hospital, schools, banks, public offices and the island's best shopping are all here, open all year.
Why buyers choose the town
For year-round living there is nowhere better on Zakynthos. Families with children, people who work on the island and buyers who want everything within walking distance usually start here.
For investors, the town offers something the resorts do not: demand for long-term rentals throughout the year, from people who work and study on the island. Apartments, townhouses and mixed-use buildings with shops below and homes above are the typical properties.
What to know before you buy
Parking and access matter in the centre, so check them for every property. Older buildings need a careful engineer's survey and a review of permits. Prices per square metre are generally higher in central streets and on the waterfront, while the neighbourhoods on the edge of town and the nearby villages offer more space for the money.
Who the town suits
Year-round residents, families, long-term rental investors and buyers of commercial property.
